Library of American Civilization

"The Library of American Civilization is a collection of materials on microfiche [ultra-fiche] relating to all aspects of American life and literature from their beginnings to the outbreak of World War I. Included in the library are pamphlets, periodicals, documents (both public and private), biogrpzhies and auto-biographies, fictional works, poety, collections of various kinds, material of foreign origin relating to America, and many rare books not generally available."

It should be noted that the collection is incomplete. It has been reported (although I haven't been able to verify) that Encyclopeida Britanica, which began the collection in the early 1970's, never completed it. However, cataloging for all titles was completed and distributed. SJU's catalog contains the cataloging record for all titles. Whether not produced, not purchased or lost the SJU collection is incomplete.

Location The collection is located on the opposite side of the left wall of the Reference Desk

"Included are first editions and early imprints, some extremely rare, together with significant supplementary materias, bibliographies, letters, criticial studies, biographies, and historical accounts, Major works and writers, from Beowulf to Shaw, are represented with sufficient materials to support under-graduate and graduate study, while less notable authors are carefully selected to meet the needs of a broad range of research criteria."

It should be noted that the collection is incomplete. Ultra-Fiche

Most fiche in the library requires a magnification of from 16x to 23x. The ultra-fiche collection was designed to require a magnification of 90x. The two Minolta machines in the General Reference Microform area can be used for both the zoom 16x-23x lens and the 87x lens. The Minolta machine on the right was specifically designed for the 87x lens although both Minoltas can be used.
